Outletcity Metzingen Marks 30 Years as Europe’s Largest Outlet Destination Amid Rising Indian Travel to Germany

March 12, 2026 | TDT Team

Outletcity Metzingen is celebrating 30 years of innovation, growth, and international brand partnerships as OUTLETCITY AG marks a major milestone in the evolution of one of Europe’s most prominent luxury outlet destinations.

What began with the opening of the HUGO BOSS factory outlet in Metzingen in 1972 has grown into a globally recognised retail hub, drawing international visitors seeking premium brands, luxury experiences, and value-driven shopping.

“Over the past three decades, Outletcity Metzingen has evolved from a pioneering factory outlet concept into a globally recognized luxury shopping and lifestyle destination,” said Janina Wittmann, Destination Marketing & Partnership Manager, “Our success is driven by strong partnerships with leading international brands, continuous innovation and a commitment to delivering exceptional experiences for guests from around the world.”

India Emerging as a Key Visitor Market

India continues to gain importance as a source market for Germany’s tourism sector. According to the latest data from the German National Tourist Office, Germany recorded 928,635 overnight stays by Indian travellers in 2025 (January–December), marking a 3.4% increase year-on-year.

Reflecting this upward trend, Outletcity Metzingen reported a 7% growth in tax refund transactions from Indian visitors in 2025 compared to 2024, highlighting the increasing shopping interest among Indian travellers visiting Germany.

For travel trade professionals designing European itineraries, the destination offers a compelling luxury shopping stop within easy reach of Stuttgart, particularly attractive for FIT travellers, luxury groups, and high-spending Indian tourists.

Europe’s Largest Outlet Destination

Today, Outletcity Metzingen features more than 170 premium and luxury brands on-site, including globally recognised labels across fashion, accessories, sportswear, and lifestyle segments. Through its omnichannel ecosystem—which combines physical retail with an integrated online platform—the destination provides access to over 500 brands in total.

Recognised as Europe’s largest outlet destination and the world’s first omnichannel outlet, Outletcity Metzingen strengthened its digital capabilities with the launch of the Outletcity online shop in 2012, setting new benchmarks for outlet retail innovation.

Expanding Beyond Retail: A Lifestyle Destination

In recent years, Outletcity Metzingen has expanded its offering beyond shopping to deliver a comprehensive lifestyle experience.

The development of Enzian Höfe introduced new retail segments such as beauty and home & living, while the opening of the Moxy Hotel in 2023 added an on-site hospitality option, allowing visitors to extend their stay at the destination.

Further enhancing the visitor journey, the Welcome Center launched in 2024, offering concierge services, guest information, and personalised assistance, reinforcing the destination’s commitment to a seamless guest experience.
